Server Switch is a very small application that lets you turn on file sharing on another Macintosh on an AppleTalk network which has:
• File Sharing
• a Scriptable Finder running
• Program Linking turned on (and you have permission to link to programs on that machine).
Server Switch itself requires a Macintosh with system 7.0 or later, and AppleTalk turned on. The machine it’s running on doesn’t have to have any of the three things listed above, and neither machine has to have AppleScript installed.
This program is closely related to Jim Luther (of Apple Computer)’s Remote Control/Server Controller programs. The main difference is that Server Switch uses the Scriptable Finder instead of a separate background-only application on the remote macintosh; so Server Switch doesn’t work on dedicated AppleShare servers, only personal file sharing. This application uses less memory and disk space than Remote Control.
You wouldn’t want to install the scriptable Finder just to use this utility; instead, use Server Controller which takes 50k of memory while it’s running, instead of 260k, and use Remote Control. The Scriptable Finder comes with system 7.5, and can generally be installed under system 7.1.1 or later.
You should be aware that Program Linking can be a security hole. Unless you trust everyone on your network to do whatever they like on your machine, you should not allow guests to use program linking.
